SEO or Paid Ads: Which Comes First?

The VoxTraffic team 2 min read

It’s one of the first questions every business asks about getting found online: do we do SEO, or run ads? They’re often pitched as rivals. They’re not. They do different jobs on different timelines, and the right answer depends on what you need and when you need it.

Rented traffic vs owned traffic

The cleanest way to understand the choice is this.

Paid ads are rented. You pay, visitors arrive, and the moment you stop paying, they stop arriving. Ads are fast — you can be in front of buyers today — and precise, but the tap closes the second the budget does.

SEO is owned. You earn rankings by being genuinely useful and well-built, and once you hold them, the traffic keeps coming without paying per click. It’s slow to build and compounds over time. Months in, it’s the cheapest traffic you have. Week one, it’s nothing.

Neither is better. One buys you speed; the other builds an asset.

What should actually decide it

Forget the ideology and look at your situation:

For most businesses the real answer is both, in sequence: ads to prove what converts and bring in leads now, SEO running in the background to lower your cost over time. You start where the intent and the returns are highest, then expand. That’s roughly how we approach marketing and traffic — channel by channel, by where your customers actually are.

The part both depend on

Here’s what gets missed in the SEO-versus-ads debate: it barely matters which you pick if the website can’t convert. Every click, paid or earned, lands on the same page. If that page is slow, unclear, or gives people nothing obvious to do, you’re paying — in money or in months — to send visitors somewhere that loses them.

So before you pour budget into either channel, make sure the destination is ready. Fix the site, then drive traffic to it. Do it the other way round and you’ll spend more for less, on both channels at once.
