Google Business Profile: The Free Tool Most Businesses Waste

The VoxTraffic team 3 min read

There’s a free tool that often sends more customers to a local business than its entire website, and most owners set it up once and forget it. Your Google Business Profile is the listing that appears when someone searches your name, or searches for what you do nearby — the box with your hours, photos, reviews and a map pin. It’s quietly one of the most valuable pieces of online property you own, and an astonishing number of businesses leave it half-built.

Why this little box matters so much

When someone searches for a local service, the profiles are usually what they see first — above the regular results, right where attention goes. For a lot of searches, people never scroll past them. They glance at the options, check the reviews and the photos, and pick one. If your profile is thin, out of date, or missing, you’re simply not in that decision.

What makes it powerful is that it catches people at the moment of intent. Nobody searches “emergency electrician” for fun. They need one now, and the profile that looks complete and trustworthy gets the call.

Fill in everything — really, everything

Google rewards complete profiles, and so do humans. A listing with one photo and no description loses to one that’s clearly looked after. Work through all of it:

It takes an afternoon to do properly, and that afternoon often outperforms weeks of other marketing.

Reviews are the engine

If completeness gets you seen, reviews get you chosen. They’re both a ranking signal and the single thing most people check before deciding. A business with a steady stream of recent, genuine reviews beats one with a handful from two years ago, even if the second is technically rated higher.

The trick is to ask, simply and consistently. Most happy customers are glad to leave a review; they just never think to unless you nudge them. And reply to every one — a warm thank-you to the good, a calm and human response to the rare bad one. People read those replies, and how you handle criticism often says more than the complaint itself.

Keep it alive, and connect it to your site

A profile isn’t a set-and-forget task. Post updates, add fresh photos now and then, keep your hours and services accurate as things change. An active listing signals a living business, and Google leans toward those.

It also shouldn’t sit on an island. The profile gets you found; your website does the convincing. When someone clicks through from your listing, they should land on a page that’s fast, clear and obviously the same business. That handoff between being discovered and being chosen is exactly where good local marketing earns its keep — the two have to reinforce each other, not just coexist.

The cheapest marketing you’re not doing

The best part is the price: nothing. No ad spend, no subscription. Just the discipline to set it up fully and tend it. For most local businesses, it’s the highest-return hour of marketing available, and it’s sitting there unused.

If your profile is bare, outdated, or you’ve never claimed it at all, that’s a fixable gap with an outsized payoff. Send us your business name and we’ll tell you what your listing looks like to a customer right now — and what it would take to make it the reason they pick you.
