AI Search Is Changing SEO: How to Adapt

For twenty years, “getting found” meant ranking on Google and earning the click. That’s still true — but it’s no longer the whole game. More people now ask ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google’s own AI summary, get an answer on the spot, and never click anything. If your business isn’t in that answer, you’re invisible to them, no matter how well you rank below it.
The old deal was simple: be on page one, get the click. The new layer works differently. AI tools read the web, decide which sources to trust, and synthesise an answer — often recommending specific businesses, tools or approaches by name.
So there’s a second question now, sitting on top of the old one: when an AI answers a question your customer is asking, does it mention you?
This doesn’t replace SEO. The same things that make Google trust you make an AI trust you. But it raises the stakes on being clear, structured and genuinely authoritative, because you’re now being read by machines that summarise rather than just list.
The good news: there’s no separate dark art here. You earn AI recommendations the same way you earn rankings — by being the clearest, most trustworthy source on your topic. A few things matter more than they used to:
It’s the same principle that’s run through good SEO and content work all along: be the best answer to the question. The tools changed. The job didn’t.
You don’t need to throw out your SEO and start again. AI search rewards the businesses that were already doing the fundamentals well — clear, helpful, well-structured, trustworthy — and quietly skips the ones coasting on thin content. If anything, it punishes laziness faster than Google ever did.
So treat it as a reason to tighten up, not start over. Build pages that answer the questions your customers actually ask, in plain words, backed by real expertise. That’s what ranks, and increasingly, that’s what gets read aloud by an AI to someone deciding who to hire.
