New Website or Redesign: How to Tell

When a website starts to feel tired, the instinct is to redesign it — new colours, new photos, a fresher look. Sometimes that’s exactly right. Sometimes it’s lipstick on a structural problem, and you’ll be back here in a year. Knowing which situation you’re in saves you the most expensive mistake: paying to make a broken thing prettier.
Start by sorting the complaints into two piles.
Cosmetic problems are about how it looks and reads: dated styling, weak photography, clunky copy, a logo you’ve outgrown. These are surface issues, and a redesign fixes them well.
Structural problems are about how it works: it’s slow, it doesn’t convert, it’s painful to update, it breaks on phones, it’s built on a platform that’s holding you back, or its very layout fights what you’re trying to do. No amount of restyling fixes these. They live in the foundations.
If your list is mostly cosmetic, refresh it. If it’s mostly structural, you need a rebuild — and a redesign would just be money spent decorating the problem.
Run your site through these. The more “yes” answers, the more it leans toward a rebuild:
One or two yeses and a refresh will probably do. Four or five, and you’re rebuilding whether you call it that or not.
Here’s the part most agencies skip: you don’t have to decide blind. A proper look at your current site will tell you whether it’s worth saving or worth replacing — where it’s quietly losing conversions, what’s fixable, and what’s load-bearing. We’d rather tell you “refresh this, don’t rebuild it” and do a smaller job than sell you a full website rebuild you didn’t need.
Because the goal was never “a new website.” It’s more booked business. Sometimes that takes a rebuild. Sometimes it takes sharper copy and a faster homepage. The skill is knowing which — before the invoice, not after.
If you’re staring at your site wondering which camp it’s in, send us the link and we’ll give you a straight answer: refresh, rebuild, or leave it alone.
