How Long Does It Take to Build a Website?

“How long will it take?” is usually the second question after “how much?” — and it has the same honest answer: it depends on what you’re building and how ready you are. But unlike cost, the timeline is something you have a lot of control over. Much of what slows a website down has nothing to do with the people building it.

A realistic range

Put aside the “your site in 5 days!” promises and the open-ended projects that drag for half a year. Most real builds land somewhere sensible in between.

A focused, conversion-first site — a handful of pages doing one job well — can be live in a few weeks. Add ecommerce, deeper integrations, lots of pages or custom functionality, and you’re into longer territory. The honest version is a clear timeline agreed at the start, with no surprises, rather than a number plucked to win the job.

What you want to avoid is both extremes: the rushed template that’s live in days and converts no one, and the “we’ll get there eventually” project with no end in sight. Good work has a deadline.

What actually drives the timeline

Scope matters, but it’s rarely the thing that decides whether a project finishes on time. These do:

• Content readiness. Waiting on text, photos, logos and product details is the single biggest cause of delay. A build can only move as fast as the content feeding it.
• Decision speed. Every round of “let me check with the team” adds days. Projects with one clear decision-maker fly.
• Feedback turnaround. Design and revisions move in rounds. If each round of feedback takes a week, the calendar stretches whether anyone’s working or not.
• Integrations. Payments, booking, CRMs and third-party tools each need wiring and testing. More connections, more time.
• Scope creep. “While we’re at it, can we also…” is how a four-week project becomes a four-month one. Worth doing — just decide it up front, not midway.

Notice how many of those sit on the client’s side, not the builder’s. That’s the part most people don’t expect.

How to get a great site live faster

You can genuinely speed things up without cutting quality:

• Have your content ready, or agree early who’s writing it. This alone removes the most common bottleneck.
• Name one decision-maker. Gather opinions, but let one person make the call.
• Give feedback in batches, quickly. All of it at once, promptly, beats a trickle over weeks.
• Lock the scope at the start. Decide what’s in and what’s a later phase, so the goalposts stay put.
